On This Day in Telephone History August 16TH 1922 toll broadcasting station WBAY call letters were changed to WEAF. Radio Station WBAY opened at 24 Walker Street, to fill a need for a New York City station for "toll broadcasting, a station which would provide facilities for broadcasting, but would originate no programs, instead leasing its program time to anyone who wanted to rent it. WEAF became WNBC in 1946 the flagship station of the NBC Network.
