On This Day in Telephone History September 17TH 1947 Hurricane George Downed 80,000 Telephone Lines. Hurricane George crossed the Florida peninsula and struck Alabama and Mississippi coasts affecting about 80,000 telephones and many long-distance lines. Second storm, September 23, brought total telephones affected to 105,000. Service was restored on 87,000 telephones and nearly all long lines by September 25TH. Portable radio was used to keep some Florida channels open during and after the storms.
