On This Day in Telephone History March 3RD 1896 United States patent No. 555,725, System for selective ringing on 4 party lines, was issued to Angus S. Hibbard. Selective ringing makes it possible to ring any of the four parties on the line without all bells sounding. Selective Ringing found a wide variety of party line service applications.

On This Day in Telephone History March 2ND 1875 Alexander Graham Bell met with Joseph Henry, who told Bell to, "Get it!" when Bell said he feared he lacked technical knowledge to invent the telephone Joseph Henry, at this time secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC was an American scientist who had done notable work with the electromagnet about 1830. His discoveries and demonstrations often are said to have been the scientific research that made Morse's magnetic telegraph practical.

On This Day in Telephone History March 2ND 1964 General Electric Company's “Switched Service" private line network linking 100,000 telephones throughout the country was placed in service. The General Electric Company was the first major customer network to use the Bell System's new Common Control Switching Arrangement (CCSA).

On February 28TH 1885 AT&T was born. Capitalized on only $100,000, American Telephone and Telegraph provided long distance service for American Bell. Only local telephone companies operating under Bell granted licenses could connect to AT&T’s long distance network. Vail thought this would continue the Bell System’s virtual monopoly after its key patents expired in the 1890s. He reasoned the independents could not compete since they would be isolated and without long distance lines. With licensed companies providing local service, Western Electric manufacturing equipment and AT&T providing long distance, Vail’s structuring of the Bell System was now complete.

On This Day in Telephone History February 26TH 1883 Telephone service established across the Mexican border. The telephone connection was between Brownsville, Texas and Paso del Norte. While some accounts say Nuevo Laredo, Matamoras was also connected, Southwestern Bell Telephone Company places the Matamoras opening in October 1883.

On This Day in Telephone History February 25TH 1955 the SAGE plan for Semiautomatic Air Defense System appeared in AT&T’S Ownership and Encumbrance Report (O&E). Shortly after, the Air Force awarded a contract to Western Electric for the construction and operation of a radar and communications network across northern Canada. SAGE was the nation's first air defense system and was the impetus for the establishment of MIT Lincoln Laboratory. The Department of Defense (DoD) reevaluated the nation's defenses against nuclear attack. As a part of the process, the DoD assigned the U.S. Air Force the task of improving the nation's air defense system. The Air Force, in turn, asked the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for assistance and this led to the formation of MIT Lincoln Laboratory.

On This Day in Telephone History February 24TH 1879 the Denver Telephone Dispatch Company became the first telephone exchange in Denver, Colorado. Frederick O. Vaille, Henry R. Walcott, and Sam Morgan secured a new telephone franchise from the American Bell Telephone Company in Boston and established Denver’s first telephone exchange.
