On This Day in Telephone History December 28TH 1871 Antonio Meucci Submitted his Caveat for the Telephone. Antonio Meucci was unable to raise sufficient funds to pay his way through the patent application process. Thus, had to settle for a caveat which at the time was a one-year renewable notice of an impending patent, first filed on December 28, 1871. This was well before Alexander Graham Bell’s or Elisha Gray’s filings on February 14TH 1876.

Its Charter provides for the construction of a telephone line from the central office at Eau Claire, PA to Parker, PA and in the counties of Armstrong, Butler, Crawford, Clarion, Mercer, Lawrence and Beaver.

On This Day in Telephone History On Christmas Day, December 25TH 1900, the first international telephone call over telegraph cable occurred from Key West, Florida to Havana, Cuba. From his office, John W. Atkins the manager at International Ocean Telegraph Company (a subsidiary of Western Union Telegraph Company), made the historic telephone call over telegraph cable at 9:55am. Atkins was reported as saying, "For a long time there was no sound, except the roar heard at night sometimes, caused by electric light current." He continued calling Cuba and finally came back the words, clear and distinct: "I don't understand you”.

On This Day in Telephone History December 21ST 1942

On This Day in Telephone History December 21ST 1942 - Completion of Underground Transcontinental Telephone Cable. The all weather underground cable was not coaxial but quadded for carrier operation. The underground cable was completed and opened to regular service which was a WWII wartime feat. The final splice, bringing the cable into service occurred in Wendover, Nevada (on the Nevada/Utah border). This is the same location of the final splice of the first transcontinental cable which connected 130,000 telephone poles that joined more than 3,400 miles of telephone line. This splice connected the first telephone line from the East Coast to the West Coast of the United States of America.
