On This Day in Telephone History December 7TH 1941 Battle of Pearl Harbor Caused Tremendous Telephone Traffic Peaks in all Cities of the United States. The surprise military strike by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii caused tremendous telephone system traffic peaks in all cities of the United States. Long distance telephoning traffic increased from 100% to 400% which was already at a record high of 3 million messages.
