On This Day in Telephone History March 11TH 1957 First Smithsonian Telephone Exhibit opened at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D. C. Telling the story of the development of the telephone. Secretary Leonard Carmichael and Dr. Melville Bell Grosvenor, president of the National Geographic Society and grandson of Alexander Graham Bell, inaugurated the exhibition illustrating the invention and development of the modern telephone system.
