On This Day in Telephone History March 13TH 1879 Certificate of Incorporation issued for the National Bell Telephone Company. The New England Telephone Company merged with the Bell Telephone Company and became the National Bell Telephone Company. The purpose of this organization was to combine the first New England Telephone Company and the Bell Telephone Company into a nationwide licensing company in order to speed the establishment of telephone service in cities throughout the country. The new corporation proved to be highly successful in this. (Dissolved by decree of court, December 8, 1903.)
