On This Day in Telephone History April 12TH 1954

On This Day in Telephone History April 12, 1954, the First Transistorized Telephone Repeater was put into operation at Americus, Georgia.

The telephone repeater included transistor amplifiers made on printed circuit boards, which was also a first of this technique on Bell telephone lines. Amplifier elements such as transistors, condensers, and resistors are mounted on a plastic card. The connections between the cards are provided by lines of conducting material that are printed on the surface of the card. The original process for this was developed by the U. S. Bureau of Standards.
