First Bell Solar Battery to Power Telephone Calls. The use of transistors and solar batteries in a rural telephone system were proven successful at the end of a five-month field test in Americus, Georgia. Bell Laboratories and the Southern Bell Company cooperated in the test that included the use of the bell solar battery to furnish electricity to power telephone calls for the first time.
