The very first of the No.1 Electronic Switching System (ESS) commercial installations of the Bell System was in Succasunna, New Jersey. It initially served 200 of the town's 4,300 customers after opening. It was designed to serve 65,000 phone lines, and switch 100,000 calls per hour.
