On This Day in Telephone History June 4TH 1926 Emma M. Nutt, The World’s First Female Telephone Operator, passed away. Emma M. Nutt was hired as the first woman telephone operator at the Telephone Dispatch Company in Boston. During her career, Miss Nutt served as operator, chief operator at several exchanges, and finally on the traffic staff.

She retired in 1915.
