On This Day in Telephone History August 12TH 1883 The Atlanta Telephone Exchange was completely destroyed by fire. The National Bell Telephone Company opened the first telephone exchange in Atlanta, Georgia in 1879, and was called The Atlanta Telephonic Exchange. It was located in a single room on the top floor of the Kimball House Hotel on the corner of Wall and Pryor streets.
