On This Day in Telephone History December 27TH 1932 John Joseph Carty Passed Away. Born on April 14TH 1861 Cambridge, Massachusetts, John Joseph Carty, passed away on December 27TH 1932 in New York. He was an American electrical engineer and a major contributor to the development of telephone wires and related technology. Carty began his career at the first telephone exchange, the Telephone Dispatch Company in Boston, and New England Telephone and Telegraph Company from 1879-1887. He held the position of electrician at the Metropolitan Telephone and Telegraph Company in New York from 1887·1893, continuing as chief engineer from 1893·1907. He then became chief engineer at AT&T from 1907-1919 moving to vice-president during June 18, 1919, to June 30, 1930. He devised the phantom circuit (Pat. 1886) as well as the twisted pair telephone wring concept and was instrumental in the development of the first transcontinental telephone line. Carty was a widely known writer and speaker on electrical subjects.
