On This Day in Telephone History August 28TH 1922 – First commercial sponsorship of a radio broadcast. The Queensborough Corporation, of Jackson Heights, N. Y., used AT&T’s radio station, WEAF, for the promotion of Hawthorne Court, from 5:00 to 5: 10 p.m., on August 28, 29, 30, 31 and September 1, at the rate of $100 for each 10-minute talk.
