On This Day in Telephone History August 29TH 1877 The First Canada installation of more than two Telephones on a private line. In Hamilton, Ontario, at the homes of Messrs. Baker, Cory and Mewburn. The lease for these and a fourth telephone was signed on October 1ST, 1877 at a cost of $45 per year. Hugh Cossart Baker Jr. leased these four telephones and had them installed in his friends’ homes so they could discuss chess moves.
