On This Day in Telephone History August 29TH 1857 American Telephone Pioneer Charles Jasper Glidden was born. Charles Glidden demonstrated proof of concept for a switchboard that could handle 50 telephone lines. He opened The Lowell Telephone Exchange which was the first Massachusetts exchange to be connected “long distance” to the Boston Telephone Dispatch Company in Boston, MA.
