On This Day in Telephone History January 3RD 1963 Bell Laboratories engineers succeeded in getting the transmitter and receiver of Telstar® 1 to operate on command from the ground. The command circuit had stopped working on November 23,1962. On February 21, 1963, radiation knocked the satellite out permanently.
