On This Day in Telephone History, February 6TH 1882, Agreement between American Bell and Western Electric whereby the latter became sole suppliers of Bell telephones and telephone equipment. Later in time (1915), the Western Electric Company of Illinois was reincorporated under the laws of the State of New York. OF PARTICULAR HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE – Western Electric was founded in 1869 by Elisha Gray (primary telephone nemesis of Alexander Graham Bell) and Enos Barton, as Gray and Barton, producing electric parts for various companies. The company was renamed Western Electric Company, and soon after, Gray sold his shares to Western Union in 1875, leaving behind his fight against Alexander Graham Bell for the telephone patent.
