On This Day in Telephone History On February 10TH 1950, the FCC granted permission to Zenith Radio Corporation to make a trial of Phonevision – a system of telecasting wherein the telephone companies would cooperate to provide clearer reception. Launched in Chicago, Phonevision trials were deployed in New York City and Hartford, CT. Phonevision offered home viewers Hollywood films for $1 per movie.
