On This Day in Telephone History March 20TH 1880 the American Bell Telephone Company, successor to the National Bell Telephone Company, was formed to carry-on the consolidation of Bell and Western Union properties (certificate of incorporation dated April 17TH ). This company remained parent company of the Bell System until December 30. 1899.
