On This Day in Telephone History April 17TH all this telephone stuff happened: 1957 Bell Laboratories announced development of magnetic tape machine capable of transmitting 1,000 words a minute -16 times faster than conventional teletypewriter systems. 1963 AT&T introduced the new cable ship long lines at Baltimore. the $19 million vessel, first of her type to be built for operation under the U.S. flag, was designed to string and repair cables across the world's ocean floors. 1968 AT&T unveiled an experimental model of a new telephone at its annual meeting in Boston. smaller, lighter and largely electronic, it weighs less than half as much as today's phones owing its lightness to integrated circuits.

On This Day in Telephone History May 18th 1877 Alexander Graham Bell delivered Chickering Hall lectures in New York City. The three days of lectures ran from the 17th to the 19th. From the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph Company's office on Peace Street, New Brunswick, NJ, Thomas Watson spoke and sang to Bell who was on stage at Chickering Hall. The telephone also was exhibited at the American Institute Fair, 3rd Avenue and 63rd Street, New York, from about these dates to the end of May.

On This Day in Telephone History May 15TH 1880 the first telephone exchange in West Virginia opened at Wheeling. The Central District and Printing Telegraph Company installed a telephone switchboard in the basement of the Peoples Bank of Wheeling Building, establishing West Virginia’s first Central Office. Among Wheeling’s first telephone operators were Harry Drummond and Miss Mattie Miner.

On This Day in Telephone History May 7TH 1963

On This Day in Telephone History May 7TH 1963 Telstar 2 placed in orbit to learn further how to overcome the effects of radiation and extend the useful life of communications satellites in space. TELSTAR 2 was essentially identical to the Telstar 1 satellite. Telstar 2 differed from Telstar 1 by employing provisions for scientific information to be transmitted in real time via the microwave telemetry system so that telemetry could be obtained after the 2 year timer had turned off the VHF beacon. On May 16, 1965, at 1403 UT, during the satellite's 4736 orbit, the VHF transmitter was turned off. All systems operated normally until that time.
