On This Day in Telephone History July 15TH 1878

On This Day in Telephone History July 15TH 1878 The First Telephone Exchange outside the United States was opened in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, by the District Telegraph Company of Hamilton. The office operated out of four rooms on the top floor of the Hamilton Provident and Loan building at the corner of King and Hughson streets.

Because Canada was a British Colony at the time, it was also the first telephone exchange in the British Empire.
