On This Day in Telephone History July 29TH 1914 First experimental tryout of the Transcontinental Telephone Line from New York to San Francisco.

In 1909, AT&T had promised the management of the Panama Pacific Exposition, which then was planned to open in 1914, to have service between the East and West Coasts by that time, if possible. The Bell System was ready on time, but the opening of the Exposition was postponed until 1915.
