On This Day in Telephone History March 21ST 1879 the shop at 62-68 New Church Street, New York City, was leased by Western Electric Manufacturing Co. Later, becoming New York factory of the Western Electric Company. Western Electric wrote the standards for quality that are still used today. Western Electric was the Largest Electrical Manufacturer in the United States prior to joining the Bell System. In 1869, Professor Elisha Gray, Enos Barton, and General Stager founded the Western Electric Manufacturing Co.

This company remained parent company of the Bell System until December 30. 1899.

Henceforth, Alexander Graham Bell’s priority of telephone patents were upheld.

On This Day in Telephone History March 18TH 1878 the first telephone exchange in New York State opened at Albany. It was located on the 2ND floor of the Van Huesen & Charles Building at 468 Broadway, but was demolished in the 1970s. The exchange opened with about 75 subscribers which were mostly doctors, manufacturers, and merchants. By year’s end there were 358 subscribers in Albany, Troy, Watervliet and Cohoes.

On This Day in Telephone History March 16TH 1789 Georg Ohm was born. Georg Simon Ohm was a German physicist and mathematician. As a school teacher, Ohm began his research with the new electrochemical cell, invented by Italian scientist Alessandro Volta. Using equipment of his own creation, Ohm found that there is a direct proportionality between the potential difference (voltage) applied across a conductor and the resultant electric current. This relationship is known as Ohm's law. Described mathematically as Voltage divided by resistance equals current.

On This Day in Telephone History March 13TH 1879 Certificate of Incorporation issued for the National Bell Telephone Company. The New England Telephone Company merged with the Bell Telephone Company and became the National Bell Telephone Company. The purpose of this organization was to combine the first New England Telephone Company and the Bell Telephone Company into a nationwide licensing company in order to speed the establishment of telephone service in cities throughout the country. The new corporation proved to be highly successful in this. (Dissolved by decree of court, December 8, 1903.)
