On This Day in Telephone History March 19TH 1888 the United States Supreme Court sustained Bell's telephone patent rights in every particular. The notable decision on appeals was one of the five most important suits filed by the American Bell Telephone Company's counsel to protect the patents. “The Telephone Cases” of the 1870’s and 1880’s culminated with the United States Supreme Court decision 126 U.S. 1 in 1888. Henceforth, Alexander Graham Bell’s priority of telephone patents were upheld.

On This Day in Telephone History March 18TH 1878 the first telephone exchange in New York State opened at Albany. It was located on the 2ND floor of the Van Huesen & Charles Building at 468 Broadway, but was demolished in the 1970s. The exchange opened with about 75 subscribers which were mostly doctors, manufacturers, and merchants. By year’s end there were 358 subscribers in Albany, Troy, Watervliet and Cohoes.

On This Day in Telephone History March 16TH 1789 Georg Ohm was born. Georg Simon Ohm was a German physicist and mathematician. As a school teacher, Ohm began his research with the new electrochemical cell, invented by Italian scientist Alessandro Volta. Using equipment of his own creation, Ohm found that there is a direct proportionality between the potential difference (voltage) applied across a conductor and the resultant electric current. This relationship is known as Ohm's law. Described mathematically as Voltage divided by resistance equals current.

On This Day in Telephone History March 13TH 1879 Certificate of Incorporation issued for the National Bell Telephone Company. The New England Telephone Company merged with the Bell Telephone Company and became the National Bell Telephone Company. The purpose of this organization was to combine the first New England Telephone Company and the Bell Telephone Company into a nationwide licensing company in order to speed the establishment of telephone service in cities throughout the country. The new corporation proved to be highly successful in this. (Dissolved by decree of court, December 8, 1903.)

SEQUENCE of Boston EVENTS IN 1876 JANUARY 17TH - Bell moved to 5 Exeter Place, Boston, in order to have the use of a room on the third floor as a laboratory. FEBRUARY 14TH - Bell filed his patent application. His experiments with variable resistance transmitters began about this time. MARCH 3RD - First telephone patent (U.S. No. 174,465) allowed. MARCH 7TH - First telephone patent (U.S. No. 174,465) was issued to Bell.
